I grew up in a time when there was hardly any TV - leave alone cable TV and of course no Internet what is even worse there not even game consoles. The only way to spend ones time - was to read comic books. But there was some kind hysteria amongst the adults at that time - who were dead against comic books - if any kid was caught reading one - he would be punished or scolded. Exchanging comic books amongst friends and class fellows was done in secret. Everyone waited anxiously for the next edition of some favourite comic book character's comic book to appear.
Adults were of the opinion that comic books are going to corrupt and ruin children, divert their attention from their studies and sports. Comic books were fun - it led to reading actual books, improve ones vocabulary. The fantastic stories helped improve ones imagination. Nearly all the adults of today - grew up reading comic books - turned them into profitable business like making extremely successful films about specific comic book characters.
Many of adults when I was kid many are no more - others are too old and feeble to care about such things - their children are grown up and living their own lives - with so much too do watching cable TV round the clock, using the Internet and playing console games, there is just about no time to read comic books. Today kids don't know the difference between Superman and Spiderman, they think it is the title of some film or some new video game. If you ask them and they say "Who has time for comic books it would be better if to play some car racing game or some game in which we are shooting at someone or something'. These games take hours to play. Surfing the Internet and watching cable TV take up lots of time.
But tearing a page off ones childhood experience - the madness which overcome adults against comic books - they could possibly never have dreamed that a day would come when kids will have so many options to take their attention away from their all too important studies and sports. Kids have their personal music systems - there are endless gadgets now. Mobile phones have games and chatting on them is another thing which kids do. Mobile phones and other gadgets are becoming increasingly sophisticated and it is impossible to tell what other innovations they will undergo and what gadgets are presently under development. The sad part is that kids have stopped reading comic books, at least they would be a good reason for them to read, but they do not - one cannot undo what has been done. Personally I feel the written word, the alphabet as we know it is realy an abbreviated version of the hieroglyphics, people read, thinking it is perfectly normal - which is absolutely false an absolute fabrication.
If things are illustrated, they make more sense than when they are written down. All reading and writing is stuck in ancient times which correct spelling, usage, grammar and sentence structure was important - I am sure language teachers would faint if they saw text messages on mobile phones and how people chatting is done in Internet chat rooms. It is the language of the future, devoid of all the existing restraints of the rules of language.Things brings me back to comic books - they illustrated - this has nothing to do with not being able to use ones imagination. As if imagination is suddenly lost while reading them, comic books reinforces imagination and encourages those who lack it to have develop it, because many people are unable to visualise a situation.
But since the era of comic books is more or less over and better things have taken their place - but people like me a dying breed, will always remember the history of different superheros and supervillains, even the people who made the effort to produce the comics and who made a name for themselves in the comic book industry.
Since I have gone through a rotten experience and adults overreacting that comic books are bad or terrible - I have no reason go crazy about the latest entertainment gadgets which popular amongst younger folk. An important lesson to be learnt is that - a kid who is not academically inclined no amount of denying him (or her) all the items mentioned above would improve their test results - those who are academically inclined, have a sense of responsibility and apportion their time between work and pleasure shich suits them best and their exam results are outstanding.
