Newspapers, which apparently are influential - publish on a regular basis letters, which for all intents and purposes look - meant to restrict freedom as much as possible. People writing under a variety of names write about how TV cable operators are 'destroying the moral fibre' of society - by having 'lewd' channels.
Invariably as a result of such letters, the premises of TV cable operators are raided and their equipment is taken away. Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (PEMRA) an extra-judicial organisation with powers which no one can challenge makes its own rules as it goes along. It is too much of a coincidence that no sooner are those letters published, certain TV cable operators are targetted. It looks more like some kind of vendetta.
The 'writers' of such letters sound extremely helpess, as if they cannot switch channels using the remote. Perhaps these are people without limbs or are so paralysed or it could be, they are so enthralled while looking at those seemingly 'erotic' channels that they cannot take their eyes off them. Or they so ignorant they do not know how to use their TV's remote and they probably never heard the popular refrain 'Hey! If you don't like what you see, change the channel, turn the page, leave the cinema hall'. This/These people want do not want people have the right to choose - this is the direct result of the idea 'People do not know what is good for them, we have to decide for them' it follows the concept 'The people do not have the right to choose their leaders, leaders are chosen for them'.
The junta has nothing better to do than to ban Internet websites, ban TV cable channels. But of course it will never do anything to stop massive corruption in the military and the bureaucracy. A classic example of military corruption, roads get flooded during a downpour - because in so many decades of military rule, each every dictator is more concerned about holding on to power, than to have storm drains built and have roads are paved properly so that there are no ditches and they are not broken in different places. The money meant for such things definitely lines the pockets of certain military officers.
It is much easier to attack what can be seen i.e. the Internet and cable TV than it is to find and punish people those responsible for massive corruption at each and every level of the bureaucracry, members of the junta and those military and civilian officers who are not a part of the ruling clique.
The greatest worry of the 'ruling class' is the growing number of educated people amongst those families which never had chance to be educated. An educated class of people which will start demanding a proper representative form of government not a dictatorship and a junta. The bureaucrats would then be truly civil servants not civil masters.
