The development of middle class - was a result of several forces. The concept of a middle class, rather the middle class being a force to be reckoned with was not realised. It is easy to rule a country - if there are only two classes - the rich and the poor. The rich rule the poor obey. The cliché term 'widening gap' between the rich and the poor' which the pseudo-intellectuals have used - would apply if there was no such things as a middle class. The existence of the middle class negates such perceptions.
When Pakistan came into existence - the middle class was small - it comprised mainly of civil servants. There were doctors and lawyers - as time went by retired military officers joined the ranks of the middle class. Instead of people plunging into abject poverty - people floated to the surface to form the middle class. With large number of labour moving to the oil rich countries and returning - they started settling in cities - initially Karachi became first city - with ever growing urbanisation.
Urbanisation spread to other towns - which were transformed into cities eventually. The middle class grew and is growing. By limiting their goals - the need to become incredibly rich was curtailed and learning the lesson that it is good within ones means.
Only the middle class value schools, colleges, clinics and hospitals - because they know they are integral part in improving the quality of life. Such ideas do not come about in the abjectly poor - who strive to survive from one day to the next.
With over all improvement in the economy of the country - the middle class has greater access to resources. The middle class sets apart the extremely wealth from themselves. A proxy government can be in power but its ability to influence or sway the middle class is limited.
A foolish government resorts to instigating sectarian and communal violence - in the flawed belief that divide and conquer works - it does not. There are certain values which keep the middle class together like glue - those are shared values. Those shared values are the similarities of problems which cannot go away if they fight. When there is water shortage - a community mindset comes into play - everyone wants to help in some capacity or the other.
The middle class rains on the parade of dictators - because they were brought into power with this belief that ruling would be easy. It would be if they were facing extremely poor people.
Even feudal lords hold sway to rig all matters political in their hands - it cannot last because when the middle class demands improvements - these leaders will not be in a position to deliver. All they know is lording over, spending money like there is no tomorrow. But this does not work - at one point people will hold them accountable. Dictators do not know the problems, hence never will have any idea how to resolve them. It is the middle class in Pakistan which speaks up against drone attacks and international terrorism not the poverty stricken class. The middle class is quick to expose the plots being hatched to destroy Pakistan.
Pakistanis have developed a curious relationship with their leaders. They quickly get bored with them, the reason being every new dictator is a bigger disappointment the previous one. Trying to lead a country into self-destruction has always been the plot of the enemies of Pakistan and the leaders imposed on Pakistan. The only thing which can be done is to make them suffer the consequence and the make the enemies feel the pain.
