There was a civil servant GA Madani, who was the commissioner of Dhaka when East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), he was credited for building the maximum number of mosques in the city. That went to his head. When he retired he contested the 1970 elections on the Jamaat-e-Islami ticket. While canvassing he met opposition everywhere. The Pakistan People's Party was ahead. The slogan 'roti, kapra or makan' meaning bread, clothes and shelter had won people over.
People told him 'We have Islam that is not what we want'. Madani was shocked, he could not believe that people were so materialistic and had rejected faith. The shock was too much for him to bear a few years later died of a heart attack
